Review LDS02 – LoRaWAN Door Sensor (Dragino)

One of the technologies that have gained great strength in recent years such as LoRaWAN, on this occasion we will review the LDS02 Sensor.

The LDS02 is a door sensor that uses LoRaWAN technology for long-range, low-power communication. Designed by Dragino, the LDS02 is ideal for monitoring doors and windows, making it a perfect choice for security systems, home automation, and even industrial environments.

Key Features

  • LoRaWAN Technology: Enables long-range communication with minimal power consumption.
  • Door Status Monitoring: Detects whether the door is open or closed.
  • Alarm Function: Real-time notifications when the door is opened or closed.
  • Long Battery Life: Can last up to 1 year, depending on usage and configuration.
  • Easy Installation: Comes with adhesive tape and screws for quick installation.

Technical Specifications

  • LoRaWAN Frequency: 868MHz / 915MHz (depending on the region).
  • Communication Range: Up to 10 km in open areas.
  • Battery: CR2450 (replaceable).
  • Operating Temperature: -20°C to 60°C.
  • Dimensions: 64 x 30 x 14 mm.

Installation and Configuration

  1. Physical Installation: The LDS02 can be installed on the door or window using the included adhesive tape or screws. Ensure that both parts (sensor and magnet) are aligned when the door is closed.
  2. Register on the LoRaWAN Network: To connect it to a LoRaWAN network, register the device using the DevEUI, AppEUI, and AppKey provided on the device label.
  3. Additional Configuration: Use a LoRaWAN platform like The Things Network (TTN) or ChirpStack to visualize the door’s status in real time.
  4. In my case I use Chirpstack to have my private LoRawan network.

Testing and Performance

During our tests, the LDS02 demonstrated:

  • High Accuracy in detecting door openings and closings.
  • Reliable Communication via LoRaWAN, even in interference-prone environments.
  • Long Battery Life, maintaining solid performance over several weeks of continuous use.

Practical Applications

  • Home Door and Window Monitoring: Receive alerts on your mobile device if someone opens a door or window.
  • Access Control in Offices: Monitor entrances and exits.
  • Inventory Management: Track warehouse doors to ensure security.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Exceptional range thanks to LoRaWAN.
  • Easy installation and setup.
  • Efficient battery consumption.

Cons:

  • The sensor is not waterproof, so it should be used indoors or in protected areas.

Conclusion

The LDS02 door sensor is a versatile and effective solution for monitoring doors and windows over long distances. Its ability to integrate into LoRaWAN networks and its ease of installation make it an excellent choice for security and automation applications.
